Let’s start using different terms for “Off Season”
In our ongoing series, we’re spotlighting the incredible members who make up CATO. Today, we sat down with Leanne Haus, General Manager of WestWorld Tours in Regina, to hear her insights on success in the tour industry, the role of CATO, sustainability, and what her dream tour would look like.
How would you describe your company brand in one sentence?
WestWorld Tours is all about creating fun, worry-free group travel experiences where people can explore incredible destinations, make new friends, and enjoy every moment without the stress of planning.
Considering the overtourism protests of 2024, what does “exploring more sustainable travel choices” mean to you?For me, it’s about being more mindful of where and how we travel—choosing experiences that support local communities, visiting places at the right times to avoid overcrowding, and making sure we’re leaving a positive impact on the communities we visit, while also educating travelers on responsible tourism practices.
Should we move away from the terms “high season” and “low season”? Could there be a better way to promote meaningful, sustainable travel options?
Yes, shifting towards terms like “signature season” and “discovery season” could help reposition travel periods in a way that highlights unique opportunities, such as fewer crowds, or seasonal natural beauty, rather than implying lesser value.
What are the keys to success in today’s changing travel industry?
Being adaptable to traveller expectations, listening to what they actually want, and offering experiences that feel unique and personal. It’s also about working and maintaining strong relationships with great industry partners, to ensure high-quality services and competitive pricing.
Which CATO initiatives resonate with you the most, and why?
I really appreciate the focus on responsible travel—making sure tourism benefits the places we visit and protects the cultural and natural heritage. And of course, advocating for fair industry regulations ensures a level playing field for tour operators.
If you could design your dream tour without any limits, what would it look like?
I’d love to create an epic, once-in-a-lifetime trip that touches all continents, mixing adventure, culture, and relaxation. Plenty of time to explore but also those little “I can’t believe I did that” moments that stay with you forever – staying in unique places, meeting locals, and soaking up every experience without feeling rushed.
